Betfred Challenge Cup Preview | Quarter-Finals

The Betfred Challenge Cup Quarter-Finals are underway this weekend with the eight remaining Betfred Super League clubs.

But who will make the final four? Don’t miss a minute of the round with all four matches set to be broadcasted on either the BBC or SuperLeague+.

St Helens v Catalans Dragons - Friday 10 April (20.00)

On Friday Night, St Helens host Catalans Dragons, live on SuperLeague+, as the quarter-finals get underway.

Saints are seeking a return to Wembley for the first time since 2021 – the year they last won it, as are the Dragons, who became history makers when they lifted their inaugural Challenge Cup trophy back in 2018.

The sides have met five times in cup history – most recently in the 2022 Quarter Final and 2018 Semi-Final.

Both teams also featured in the 2007 Challenge Cup Final, which was the French team’s first ever major final, and the season that St Helens secured back-to-back trophies with a confident 30-8 victory.

Paul Rowley’s men progressed to the quarter-final stage with a convincing win over Castleford Tigers in the Fourth Round. Likewise, Catalans showed their class against Oldham to book their spot in the last eight.

St Helens enter this game on the back of a sensational home win in Rivals Round, scoring four tries in eight minutes to beat Wigan Warriors in emphatic fashion, and will be looking to carry this momentum into Friday Night's cup tie.

Similarly, Catalans claimed the spoils in the French Derby against Toulouse Olympique last weekend, so will be equally as motivated to leave their mark.

Paul Rowley has made seven changes to the Saints squad that was named for the Good Friday victory over Wigan last time out.

Shane Wright and Agnatius Paasi step out of the side, as do Alfie Sinclair, Billy Keeley, and Chris Matagi, whilst loanees from Hull KR, Jordan Dezaria and Bill Leyland, return to their parent club.

Kyle Feldt is back available for selection. Senior Saints men, Jonny Lomax and Alex Walmsley, are also are back in contention following injuries.

In addition, George Delaney could feature for the Red V, as could George Whitby, who both return. Youngsters Cole Marsh and Oscar Knox are also included in the 21-man squad list.

The only change to Joel Tomkins' Dragons is that captain Benjamin Garcia comes back to replace Josh Allen.

Hull KR v York Knights - Saturday 11 April (13.30)

The current holders Hull KR will welcome York Knights to Sewell Group Craven Park for their quarter-final tie, live on BBC Two.

The Robins will be aiming to retain all their trophies in 2026 and will be relishing home advantage this weekend.

York Knights will compete in their first Challenge Cup quarter-final since 2023 and know just how special the Road to Wembley is, having played on the hallowed turf last year and going on to lift the 1895 Cup trophy in dramatic fashion.

Just like Round 1 of the Betfred Super League, York will be hoping to cause another upset against the current champions.

An Ata Hingano drop goal shocked the world of rugby league on opening night as the Knights pulled off a stunning 19-18 win over the treble-winners.

The question is, can they do it again? Or will the Robins prove too strong?

York haven't won away at Hull KR since 1958.

In the previous round, the Knights and the Robins secured huge wins over Keighley Cougars and Huddersfield Giants respectively.

Warrington Wolves v Leigh Leopards - Saturday 11 April (15.30)

Will Warrington Wolves reach Wembley for a third successive year? Find out by watching on SuperLeague+. Sam Burgess’ men have enjoyed strong cup runs in the past two seasons, before falling agonisingly short at the final stage.

Standing in their way are 2023 Challenge Cup winners Leigh Leopards, who the Wolves cruised past in Rivals Round with a 42-6 scoreline.

Form goes out of the window in cup games, however, with a much-improved Leopards outfit expected to turn up for Saturday’s cup clash.

Beating the Wolves is a tough ask for any team at present, as they sit pretty at top of the Super League table.

There are no strangers to each other in this competition though, having met as recently as last year’s semi-final, where the Wolves held on the beat the Leopards in a pulsating cup tie (21-14).

To get here, Leigh grinded out a win against Hull FC in the last round, whilst the Wolves comfortably cruise past Goole Vikings.

Wakefield Trinity v Wigan Warriors - Sunday 12 April (13.00)

On Sunday, a blood and thunder battle awaits at the DIY Kitchens Stadium and will be streamed live on BBC One. Will Wakefield Trinity’s red-hot form continue, or will Wigan Warriors roll into the next round? The stakes are high with a semi-final place on the line.

Interestingly, the last time Trinity won the Challenge Cup Final came against Wigan in 1963. But it’s been exactly a decade since Sunday’s hosts reached the semi-finals of the competition; something Daryl Powell’s current side will be determined to change.

Meanwhile, the Warriors are on a mission to reclaim some silverware in 2026, and this starts with the coveted Challenge Cup trophy, which they have lifted a record 21 times in its nearly 130 years of history.

There are 20 previous Challenge Cup meetings between these two sides, including the 1963 final, as well as the 1946 final.

To reach this stage, Wakefield pulled off a major scalp by beating local rivals Leeds Rhinos in the previous round, while Wigan overpowered Bradford Bulls.

Trinity are searching for a sixth successive victory across all competitions, but are under no illusion of the task that lies ahead against a Warriors outfit who will be reeling from their devastating derby loss on Good Friday.

That said, Belle Vue is no easy place to go for any team, and the Warriors haven’t won away at Wakefield since 2022. But as the fact remains they are record Challenge Cup winners, it's Trinity who are the firm underdogs.

Did you know that Jai Field has scored tries in the Warriors' last three meetings with Wakefield? Fitting that's he recently returned for injury in time for their highly anticipated cup clash...
